Try pulling the codes to see if anything pops up if you haven't all ready. then try disconnecting the battery for a little while to see if it resets anything, do the lights stay on when ever you use the the brakes? could be that the brake pedal isn't depressing enough to where after you use the brakes there isn't enough drag afterwards but enough pressure to keep the brake light on, do they stay on when ever you use your lights? if so then it could be some type of relay issue, like the fans staying on after you shut down the car, it sounds like a short some where though now that I re-read your message, you said often which means not all the time so something isn't sending a signal to tell your brake lights to go out all the time, you might have to do some wire checking, hope some of that was helpfull and good luck !!

check your break light switch, it's at the top of brake pedal and adjustable. might be a little off or may be sticking. good luck.

You should try inspecting for and correct pedal binding and stop light swith adjustment. Also check to make sure brake pedal is returning fully to released position.
