Default bad shifting problem?

I'm new yes hello! Anyways i have a 1997 plymouth neon expresso sohc. When starting from 0 mph and i floor it it kinda accelerates quickly but it only revs to around 5500 rpms and thats fine, id like it to be quicker but i dont know what could cause it but my main problem is; if im traveling at around 35 mph and i mash the pedal it redlines to 6500 rpms i believe BUT it acts as though im just reving it up and it doesnt shift as it would from 2nd to 3rd or from mashing it at 50 in 3rd and it shifts to 2nd. Any ideas on waht could cause this? sorry if this isnt detailed enough. Thanks

automatic i'm guessing... hows the fluid on it? and just in case u didn't know Dexron fluid and such dont do these transmission justice... they just cause it problems. cant remember the correct fluid but the owners manual will tell ya. if its fine and is the correct problem i might check into changing the filter and such... how many miles does it have?

Yes it's an automatic. It has roughly 157k on it, it runs like a top though!
