What else is it doing? have you check the signs of a bad Head gasket? Oil in anti-freeze and vice versa, white exhaust smoke, bubbling anti resevouir. If you don't have any of those check for leaks like 95 suggested like the water pump, when that goes you will definately know, your rad might just need flushed (or is going bad on you ) the rad cap isn't holding correct pressure, fans not kicking on, Bad fan relay or leaky hoses, Good Luck !!

If you hear bubbly "liquid moving" noises from engine area on startup or shutdown, you may be on the road to bad headgasket problems. Based on reading another site whose name cannot be mentioned, bubbling is the first step to HG failure, ostensibly because air "gets into the system" or somesuch. In any case, they said to replace radiator cap asap to prevent this particular HG failure.

If your car overheats I'd ask:

-Radiator fluid good? If not, refill. Perhaps with a dye for leak identification.
-If so, clog in radiator line, leaky radiator cap, leaky radiator, leaky tubes? Do you smell antifreeze when you pop open the hood just after a long trip?
-Head gasket? (Murkyish oil, murkyish antifreeze, white smoke)

have you made sure your fan is turning on?

I had this problem on an old neon and turned out the head gasket was fine...but I had a cracked head!!!

Completely flush out your system and start over again, sometimes thats all it needs.

Oh, and it is not very common, but your head might have just warped on you at somepoint, causing a coolant leak, and thus overheating, that happened to a friend of mine. Again gasket was fine in that case.
