Best Way to Get The Crankshaft Pulley Back On
ORIGINAL: racerx55
it dont hurt the crank usually, but it can beat the thrust bearing pretty bad sometimes.
i got pissed and did that on my old automatic peon and it had a weird rattly knocky noise at idle ever since then. the crank moved in & out 1/8" or more, lol.
eventually the end play causes uneven wear on rod bearings, can make the pistons noisy from being off center, all kinds of stuff. i wouldnt worry too much, but on high HP race motor you'd be in trouble

Well when I had to put mine back on, since its soo cold outside, I just took the pulley and put it in a oven for a little bit. It cause the pulley to expand and since the block is soo cold, it took a couple of hits with an flat head hammer and thats it.
Works like a charm.

Hnda8r, how hot did you set the oven.? Im trying to get my stock pulley on now.I put in oven at about 220, then ran it right out, and managed to hammer it on about halfway.I have to tighten the rest of the way with the bolt, but its kinda a pain, cause the crank likes to turn over.So I have to hold a pry bar between the holes in middle of pulley to hold it while Im turning.Problem I got now is the bolt is bottoming out agains the socket that was stuck in there.Good news is I got at least 6-7 threads of the bolt to go in.So I think once I get a shorter bolt, I will be all set.
What a pain in the *** process for something as simple as a crankshaft pulley.I think dodge made it that way so normal everyday people cant fix the car themselves, and are forced to take it to shop...so dodge makes more money.[:'(]

well it didnt look like i messed anything up when i used a hammer...how canI tell if something is wrong before i put it back together....cause this is gonna be a high HP motor build..[&:]

for the rest of you guys struggling with putting the pulley on, you should invest in an impact, if you dont have air, get an electric impact gun. Well worth the money as much as youll use it. find yourself a small propane torch and put some heat back on the pulley itself and run it on a few cranks untill it tightens up. heat it again. i would give about 10 minutes cool time between heating it so the crank never gets hot enough to burn the seal & the heat wont get to the timing belt. put the flame directly on it for 45 seconds to 1 minute, then wrench your *** off and it'll go on. if it stops, wait 10 minutes or longer, and then do that again. you should be putting grease or oil of some sort on the crank so it slides on easier. just so it isnt dry.
BTW While I'm thinking about it. Given the fact that there's no key on the pulley does it matter how it's oriented on the crankshaft. If so, how should it be mounted. I do see a shallow slot on the back. Line that up with the key on the timing gear maybe?
just put it on wherever.
ive never known of a certain alignment mark or anything.
your mark may be where it was sitting against the key all that time, but it doesnt have to go back there.
its wherever you can get the thing on before you get pissed and get out the sledge to force it on

please dont ever do that if you are using the stock pulley......
the pulley has a rubber seal between the middle section where the spokes are and the outter pulley wheels.....if the heat on it becmes too much, you can damage the rubber which will eventually cause the pulley to fall apart

You can heat the pulley in the oven to say 200 fto expand it some.

Recheck your end play on the crank. make sure its the tolerance its supposed to be. Ever heard the term crankwalk? usually a DSM 7 bolt comes to mind, same idea, but they do it on their own.thats why my DSM got a 6 bolt motor. i went and found a really long bolt to fit the crank for the neon, and run a nut down on it to pressthe pulley back on.

But it slid on about half way then I hit it with a hammer the rest of the way. Its risky but it works for me.
No problems thus far and that was 3 months ago.
