take your piston tensioner and put it in a vise and push the piston all the way in until the hole on the piston and the hole on the carrier line up, put a nail or what i used was a small allen wrench and put it in there to keep the piston al the way in. line your timing belt up cprrectly, put the tensioner in, and the piston on, tighten all the bolts while keeping pressure on the bottom of the piston against the tensioner and torque the two bolts down. once everything is aok, pull out the allen wrench or whatever you used and the piston should not move out at all or very minumal if that. if done correctly, you should be able to put the retainer (allen wrench) back in the hole.

SOHC or DOHC?

Make sure there is no slack in sections of belt other than the tension pulley side, also make sure the belt teeth are fully engaged with the sprocket teeth.

what i do is once the tensioner has the pin pushed in and locked down(i use the allen wrench too), install the belt.....then put the tensioner in place....start the bolts, then use a screwdriver or pry bar and wedge it under the tensioner so that it hold tension on the belt.....(this way you can make sure your timing marks will still line up after you remove the allen wrench).....then tighten the bolts that hold the tensioner in place....then remove the allen wrench
