4x4 question
Hey everyone I just pickup a 85 4x4 1/2 ton pickup.....There are a couple odd ends I have to fix and was wondering if any of you could name this problem or point me into the right direction. When I have the truck in 2 wheel it seems to make a noise almost in the middle of the truck liek rattling/loose it seems like now when I put it into 4-hi the noise goes away all together is something loose on transfer case, need to be replaced what?....let me know if there are anymore questions thanks for your time Dan
First - I would replace the u joints, because they are cheap.
Second - I would crawl under the beast, and feel around. Check the output of TC, for movement, also the rear diff. Jack up the rear onto jackstands, making sure the beast is in 2wd, put it in drive and listen for the rattle. What also helps in detecting noises, is a long screw driver (1.5'), place the end on the TC, and ear to the handle. I would bet its your TC, you would have a 208 is my best guess. Take it out, and rebuild it.
Nice choice of rig. Myself I have a 82 4x4 1/2 ton, with 360, 727, 208, D44, 9 1/4. Its a robust rig, with good potential to build up to a good bogger, mudder, trail, hauler. Leafs all the way around, so easy to jack. My plans have somewhat changed. But for now, its a basic build up. 4-5" Lift kit, 1-2" body lift, 35"+ Mud Terrains, winch. Once that is done, which will take some time, perhaps 6 months, to gather cash and wrench. Then I swap in some beefier built diffs, D60's all the way around, highest gears I can get, with ARB air locker. Maybe another 6 months for that. Then I start rebuilding the engine, trans, tc. 6 months. Then comes the fun part, buying a Hummer H1 body kit from a place down in Utah.Cost is high, $6k to $10k. I am doing the convirtable, 4 door which is $8k. And a few days to swap it in.
Yaaaaaaa I can dream, plus I am really bored at work here. And I am dead tired, cant snooze or bossman will give me the boots.
