Camshaft upgrade
I have a stock 89 W-250 318 throttle body injected, non roller camengine. I am changing to 360 heads and wanted to upgrade camshaft. Can I do so? I am just wanting a good low to mid range power. Any Sugestions? Thanks, Todd
i was told if you change your 318 heads for 360 you will be downgrading not upgrading, losing power and torque. you 8:5.1 compression right now, doing this will take it to 7:5.1 or something like that. i would find what you need to rebuild your heads right now and the cam that i'm looking at for my 1991 D150 318 is a CompCams High Energy. Says good for a 340 &360, but brings a 318 alive. if you don't have a PAW Performance Parts Catalog yet you might think about getting one. the same cam i'm looking at$185.99, butin PAW $108. http://www.pawinc.com/and here is there phone number, you might have to call for the Mopar one: 818-678-3000
you would have to mill the head slightly look on google for the approx specs. from what i understand though 318 and 360 heads have differant runner lengths which can affect low end power on a 318.
your best bet is to go more or less budget and install approx 1.94 1.60 valves clean up the exhaust port real good and simply port match the head to the intake manifold you are going to use if its a stock manifold leave it be. a good cam would be a rv type cam great idle low and mid range power you can get them from crane comp etc..

thats the cam i had in my 74 recently i dont know how it will affect ur tbi but i didnt have any lope at idle and i believe you should be fine.
if u install headers you will have to replace the intake manifold and plug ur smog injection holes on the exhaust manifold and go with a carb for ease. with the smog parts in place you are a bit limited to what mods you can do to that truck in terms of towing offroad performance the tbi probably gets horrible gas mileage anyway
what type of 360 heads to u have and whats currently on the block is important i can find u stock form flow numbers

thats what i thought and by installing a eddy or 360 head you would loose low end maybe not so much with a 360 head. which would lead to mismatched parts and contradicting performance mods. i.e mid to high rpm head with a low to mid cam.
for more low to mid rpm how about a budget stroker kit a 348 is a decent motor that can draw up to 350 in a low to mid power band has well has a great amount of torque what these v8's are known for
