Default engine swap question

i have 99 dodge ram with a 318 and a five speed. the engine is going out do to high miles and burning a bunch of oil. i was wondering if it is possible to put a 360 with the 5speed tranny because the trucks did not have the option from the factory?

If the 5-speed wasn't available from the factory on the 5.9, the computer might not like not seeing an auto tranny there. Sounds like the best possible outcome, is that you have to look at an idiot light for the rest of your trucks life lol. Worst oucome I guess, is that the computer refuses to operate without the auto transmission attached. It could go either way.

Anything is possible, the question though is work and money. There might be a fix out there, or it could just be easier to use the auto tranny. It just still surprises me that people are still swapping up to bigger engines with gas the way it is.

i agree if u put the 5.9 in there the air fuel ratio will be off as well becasue the 5.2 has a smaller area of compression and that kinda info is built into the computer programing.

If it is a 360 or 5.9 out of the same year i would get the computer but the manual and auto computers are different because i have bought the wrong one before and had to return it.

this has alot of variables if you plan on swapping motors of course a dif ecm is nessacary. but if you dont plan to smog it why not go with a megasquirt ecu or the spectre ecu youll be able to fine tune the motor increasing horsepower
if you do and u live in cali youll have to get a 360 and ecm out of the same year truck or newer all smog parts air cleaner etc must be in the same distances has it were in the car or truck u pulled it from same with o2 sensors if there in a diff place on the 318 versus the 360 for any reason theyll fail you

you can get around smogs though has long has you find a shop thatll pass it illegally rates for this can be anywhere from 150 to 500 bucks
with a aftermarket ecu you can run multipule settings one for performance one for economy one for smog etc..
