Default charging issues

my 85 w/ a 318 had some bozo before me frankenstein the wiring for the ingition, a/c , and some of the other accessories. i thought i fixed the problem when i wired up me a/c the right way. i thought that it was just taking up too much power from the battery. It works better now, but the alternator seems to stop charging when i flip the a/c switch on. my buddy and i tested the thing with his DVOM and advance auto parts carging system tester. Tested the field circuit and battery. I was only peaking at about 37 or so amps. so i am going to replace the alternator to see if this does the trick. does anyone know what else it could be? the voltage regulator and ballast resistor seem to be working but i dont know what else it can be. i may just end up finding myself and unmolested harness for under the hood. any help would be appreciated
