Default Cylinder Heads

I was reading an article today about doing a efi to carb swap and it says that the heads on my 88 W100 (5.2L) may not be "carb friendly". I`m pretty new to this generation truck, so I really don`t get the whole picture about "swirl port" heads as opposed to the earlier heads. Do I need to swap out my heads to run a carb? Someone please give me some info.

Sounds like poop to me. what did the article say the problem is supposed to be?

lots of ppl have carbs on that head dont they?

by the way, how come you want to get rid of EFI and go carb?

That article said the compression ratio was too low and seemed vaguely biased.

When the tree hit, my wiring harness was cut to shreds. I rigged it up enough to start the motor a few times, but it was too far gone to ever work right again. I figure that if I have to rewire the truck, why not make it a little easier to tune in the process.

I plan on a new intake, 4 barrel carb, cam, no ac, all the good stuff.

An '88 TBI is a wet flow intake tract anyway, so what's the difference? If anything, the high swirl heads would help atomize a carbs somewhat larger fuel droplets. I'd go for it.

From some of the info I know,the heads on these year motors are good for efi or carbs,they are better than the older stock 318 heads.
As far as the compression,9.2 is what is in these motors,also higher than the carbed motors.

ot all carbed engines had low compression the main reason fueal injection engines run a bit higher compression the chances of detanaion is low due to the pcm controlong things with the engine managment and also for voulumetric efficancythe higher the compression the more efficant an engine becomes

Sure it wasn't talking about C.A.R.B regulations. Some heads aren't legal to run on-road (racing, and stuff like that only).

I`ll see if I can find the page again so you can all read it. The basic idea was the guy was trying to build a motor for his truck and someone told him not to use a carb with those heads, so he went with a set of police interceptor heads. But this guy also turned a Power Ram into a 2wd, so I`m not sure he really was a good source of info.

9.2 comp is fine. Tailor the advance curve for the gas and ambient temps your gonna run. 87 octane should be no problem.
