i am planning to look at 2 trucks tomorrow and need some help on what to look for as in problems.1 is a 1981 slant 6 with nothing on it,he said it is not power brakes is he right.i thought everythingfrom then onhad power brakes.the other is a 1986 318 with air.any and all help will be helpful.how is the mpg for both and are they both carb?if carbs do they cause problems and how many barrels?thanks

 

The 1986 is about 12 mpg. It is a 1 barrel carb. Never had problem with mine.

 

Never seen a manual braked 80s 1st gen,but they might have made a few. The scant 6 should have a Holley 2bbl I think. Not sure what year they went 2bbl.
Most 318s were 2bbl,however a few came down the line with a Quadrajet. My Dad had an '85 318 Q-jet. Look in the gas mileage post at the top of the page.

 

My '81 has a 1 bbl, and the infamous "lean burn". A "super 6" intake is 2 bbl, and a reman distributer is $35, to switch out the "lean burn", and then go with the GM hei modhttp://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15779 to eliminate the Chrysler ignition nightmares.
Mine has power brakes too, but manual steering. Since my steering box is bad, I'm switching it to power steering.

 

My '85 had a 2bbl,w/'fuel control'.It was a super sick. Woudn't pull an overpass in O.D. without losing 10 mph.
