1992 ram, 3 spd auto trans. Will not go into 2nd gear by itself. You can manually shift into 2nd and it works fine. When you place selector in 2nd and start off from idle, trans shifts into 2nd ok. However, if selector is in drive when you start off tran upshifts from low, bumps twice and goes directly into drive. It will not automatically downshift into 2nd. Hence no passing gear. You can downshift manually into second.

Tran does not seem to be slipping and it shifts smooth enough. Error code on dash translates to faulty overdrive solenoid. Since tran does not have an overdrive, is this code an indication that the second speed solenoid is bad?

Also, when first cranked the truck shakes badly when put in gear, especially in reverse.

 

id take it in for a diagnosis. i had a similar issue with mine not wanting to change out of second...and it was a 2 dollar spring linking the throttle to the trans. but it wasnt shaking like yours...
