'92 dodge automatic gearbox
My '92 dodge has a problem with the gearbox all of a sudden. The gearbox will not changte into 2nd or 3rd gear????? By the way the paper work says its a RAM but the the car badge says CARAVAN???
We have been told it needs an oil change and could be in SAFETY mode. But we were also told if it were in safety mode it would not go faster than 80km/50 miles an hour BUT it does go faster but the revs go from the usual 2000 to 4000 rvs.
MY QUESTION is can anybody give us any advice on whether we should change the oil and filters OR should we change the gearbox which means taking out the engine too!
ANY suggestions or helpful advice would be hugely appreciated as we are short of money and don't want to change the oil at a cost of 150.00 euros when that is not necessary. The price for changing the gearbox is quoted at 600,00 euros which i am prepared to pay BUT only when i know that the gearbox is BROKEN and doesn't need only an oil change or something.
Can Anybody Help Please

THERE ARE PRESSURE SENSORS ON THE CARAVAN TRANNYS THAT ALOW IT TO CHANGE GEARS. THEY ARE LOCATED BELOW THE LARGE WIRING HARNESS THAT PLUGS IN ON THE RADIATOR SIDE OF THE TRANNY. I HAVE A COUPLE CARAVANS , AND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. CHECK AND BE SURE THESE SENSORS ARE PLUGGED IN. THE ONLY OTHER POSSIBILIY IS THE COMPUTOR MOUNTED TO THE TRANNY. IT IS LOCATED DIRECTLY ABOVE THE PRESSURE SENSORS. IT IS COVERES BY A BLACK PLASTIC DIRT SHIELD. BOTH THE SENSORS AND THE COMPUTOR CAN BE PICKED UP AT A JUNK YARD FAIRLY CHEEP. IF YOU END UP CHANGING THE COMPUTOR MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN ALL AROUND THE OLD ONE VERY WELL BEFORE YOU REMOVE IT. IT MOUNTS DIRECTLY TO THE JALVE BODY , YOU DONT WANT TO GET AND DIRT AT ALL IN THE VALVE BODY.
Your first question about the Ram/Caravan thing - Dodge called the passenger vans with side windows Caravan, and the cargo vans without all of the windows and seats and such Ram.
The sensors sounds about right. I'd check those first before spending money on a new tranny. Also, check the tranny fluid. It should be a red color. If it's dark brown then it needs to get changed.
