Auto hubs to Manual hubs
I have a 1989 DODGE W150 PICKUP V8 5.2 Liter Short box.
Can i change the auto hubs to manual hubs?
Here's the story, a few years back it wouldn't go into 4 wheel. I found out it was the vacuum motor on the front drive shaft, changed it with one from the scrap yard, All was well.
Now it wont again, except this time it's the vacuum supply, The motor works fine.
Can I just ditch the hole thing and install manual hubs? The local parts store sold me some and told me they would work fine, but I don't know how to do it. I'm guessing that I'll have to lock the shafts into place somehow??
Anyone done this before?
I can post pics of what I'm looking at if that will help.
Thanx

http://ramchargercentral.com/boards/...owtoshow;id=78This shows how to install hubs.
Found it http://ramchargercentral.com/boards/...?topic=68410.0The RCC link how to lock the CAD
To lock the CAD
1. Take the cover off
2. There will be 3 e-clips you need to remove to free the shift fork
3. Slide the shift fork over so it will be in the locked position
4. Replace e-clips so that they hold the shift fork in said position.
5. Reinstall cover/fork assembly

i was wondering the other day - if you unlock the hubs on these, are they spinning entirely freely form the front axle? I dont know if im being clear with that question. My friend and I werearguing about mechanicaldrag caused by 4wd even when it is disnegaged. So what im asking is if when you manually unlock the hubs on a 4wd is the only thing spinning the wheel assembly? or do they turnthe assemblyright to the transaxle but it just isnt hooked up to the engine?
When you have a part time transfer case and manual lock out hubs, only the wheel is spinning. That is one of the main reasons to put manual hubs on a CAD axle. From the factory, everything is turning inside the front end. For example, when you run down the road with the stock setup, the front driveshaft is spinning and therefore everything in the axle is spinning. With lock out hubs, the front drive shaft no longer spins. Understand?
yep. makes sense. I dont understand why they wouldnt always have this set-up. do they really think that we are so lazy that we cant get out of our cars to lock the hubs in when we need 4wd? geez
Yea, you and me are willing to get out and lock em in for piece of mind but obviosly in the 80's people were extra lazy!!!
In my opinion, if you cant get out to lock in your hubs or climb into your own truck you probably in good enough shape to drive it.
