Default used magnum heads= scrap weight?

Well, I am starting to gather parts to doa 318 buildup. Planning to follow the parts-book buildup that one of the mopar magazines did a couple years ago for 400 HP of bolt on performance. ANyway, I found what I thought was a great deal on some 318 magnum heads.. $100 for the pair. When I took them to the machine shop, the owner bet me that they were junk because he has seen so many junk cracked magnum heads, although he was optimistic because they initially looked good.

Anyway, no luck, they are both cracked in multiple places. I have since found out that this is a common problem in these heads and there are a couple places to get new castings that are cast correctly. They cost about $300 a piece for the new castings. *Sigh*

I got mine from a somewhat local junkyard for $250/pr after cleaning, pressure test and resurfacing everything checked out. I've heard about the problems with cracks between the valve seats though. Maybe I got lucky.

Bummer about your heads.
