Default Why won`t it start?

You guys already know that I just did alot of work to the motor in my truck. Now I can`t get it to start. First my distributor was 180 out. I fixed that, cranked it, and it backfired and I had to throw a rag over the carb to put it out. I tried advancing the timing a little, and it shot a plume of flame out the headers. Tried to back the timing off a few degrees, back to backfiring. Any guesses? Is there something I`m missing?

I think I may have set my distributor with #1 at tdc on the exhaust stroke. I was working alone, so I couldn`t put my finger over the plug hole, I did it off the timing mark on the balancer. I know we set the carb on fire three times. This weekend I should have more time to work on it.
