Default Changing rear brake info

My father owns a 92 Power Ram 250 LE, with the Cummins Turbo Diesel. I am going to change his rear brakes, but I have a few questions. According to the FSM, I have to remove the hub, and then the entire inner axle shaft to pull the drum. My question is, is there a short shaft from the hub that meshes with the axle shaft in the tube, or is the axle shaft 1 shaft running from the hub to the pumpkin? If it's 1 shaft, how hard is it to put it back together? Do I have to play til I feel the splines mesh, or do I need some sort of an alignment tool? Or would it better just to take it some where and some1 else deal with it?

when i did my brakes I only had to remove the wheel to get the drums off. I have never heard of having to remove the axles
