Default Question. 2x to 4x4 swap?

OK so here is the info.
I can get a 79 D100 for $300. It's 2X w/ 360, needing a timing chain (so I was told) body is in really good condition except tail gate, just little dings here and there. largest dint is on the rocker.. Oh, and can get a 2nd motor 318 out of a wini for an extra $100.. anyway.
For the price and a few $$ in parts it should make a good runner..

Now for questions.
I would like in the future as money allows swap it to a 4x4. How difficult would this be? It's my understanding (and could be wrong) that dodge used the same frame for there 2&4X's..
Or is it just not worth the hassle?
One good thing is they guy has 3 IHC 70's erra with dana's under them and would sell the axles. If I choose that route. but may have to purchase the whole truck Price is about the same $200-400. but can get that for the scrap mettal or good body parts.?

SOOOOOO.. am I just stupid or what?
Only reason for all this is to get back that power wagon I let go years ago.

any and all information woudl greatly be appreciated.

OH.. if I got the 318 would I need any adapters to install it while I do a complete rebuild of the 360? It's an auto tranny not sure which one though as the current owner doesn't know and there was too much mud on the ground to crawl under an have a look see. ???

Gonna be alot of work. Front crossmember's different of course, but if you're handy you can torch off the rivets and fab one, or swap in a factory one if you can find it. All the rest of the holes are there for the factory spring brackets. Trans crossmember's different. The steering box in the 2wd position makes for handy crossover steering, but the bolt holes should be there for the factory 4wd position. The 2wd auto trans tunnel is different, 4x4 autos use the manual trans tunnel.

Be a lot less headache to set the good body on a 4x4 chassis. 318s/360s swap out with the corresponding torque converters. 360's external balance. The wini trans is most likely a 727. The 360 trans is too.

Thanks for the info Lugnuts.
after sleeping on it last night I was thinking of just looking for a good rolling chassis. Slowly build up as I wish, lift it, powder coat everything, linex the frame, drop the 318 in the 2X, build up the 360, find a good used tranny and transfer if the roller wouldn't have any.
Sounds more fun plus I have more time than money.

Anyone around have an older Dodge w/ links instead of leafs? just not sure what avenue I want to go down at the moment. dedicated trail rig or everyday driver with great off road ability.

and if I'm lucky I might find a roller with a decent body on it to.. Then I'd have 2 projects.. 4x4 first though.

Love the site so far and haven't even see a 1/4 of it yet.

OK so another question.

What years are interchangable? If I'm looking for a roller I'm sure I can widen my searching. I thought (it's been a while) 1977 - 1984 were basically the same platform.. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
