Exclamation oil poured out, covering bottom and side of motor

I was almost home the other day, when the oil light came on. I had just checked it about a week ago and it was fine. No spots in the driveway or in my parking spot at work either, so I figured it must be a short in the wire or something. Luckily I was about a mile or two from home, because when I pulled up in the driveway there was somke coming from under the hood and a trail of oil behind me. I pop the hood and there is oil all over the passenger side of the engine, as well as the exhaust and the tranny. Is that where the oil pressue sending unit is located? I'm thinking it may have sprung a leak or something. I can't really think of a reason why such a major leak may have happend. Oh yeah, it's an 89 D250, with the 5.2L TBI engine with the auto tranny. Thanks in advance!

you might want to check the oil filter to see if it came loose or blew out a gasket as it is on the passengers side

My first thought was that the oil filter had maybe gotten loose somehow, and I carefully checked it as soon as I got home. It was pretty tight. So the next thing I thought was that the sending unit had come loose or something. I knew it was on that side of the motor somewhere. And of course it has rained almost non-stop for days here so I was unable to get anything done on it yet. Will I have to remove anything to gain access to the sending unit?

should be pretty easy on a 1st gen. top of the block, behind the edge of the intake manifold, beside distributor, passenger side.

you might want to just fill it back up with oil, hose it off with degreaser, and crank it back up and see where its coming from.

Ok I found it. Now how do I remove it? It seems that I will need a large socket with a long extension. Anyone happen to know the socket size?

Takes special socket available at auto supply. At least that is the easiest way.

Problem solved! I got the part, the special socket, and five quarts of oil for $46. The job took about 10 minutes. Thanks to all who helped!
