The 8 1/4" rear end is stronger than they are given credit for. I've run one behind a mild 383/auto in my '83. It lived through numerous trips to the drags, the truck would cut 1.90 60 ft times, with ET's in the 14.30 range. Unless you're planning on a 4000 stall and a transbrake I'd just run watcha got.
If you must change it, an '85-93 9 1/4" from a 1/2 ton or Ramcharger is a bolt in. You'll have to change the front rotors to match wheel patterns.
An even better find would be a 72-73 1/2 ton 8 3/4". It's a bolt in also, and has the same wheel pattern. Got one under my '84.
All half ton front springs are the same, slant 6 to 440. No mods needed.

thanks guys
thanks for the info iam new to the truck seen really and my dad gave me this 1980 dodge. I learned how to drive stick with this truck before i got my license and now i want to build a street truck out of it. I have some time untill i acually get to start working on it. I bought a chyrlser 360 from my buddy for a couple hundred dollars and iam going to bore and stroke the engine over and i am going to buy a torqueflite tranny for it and as far as the rearend iam going to pry go and find a 8 3/4 for it just to beef it up alittle bit. But first things first is to get my engine project started off. thanks for the info again and stay MOPAR.
