YOU v-8 guys have it so good.
So, I've been pricing rebuilding the 318 in my truck.
I just finished a rebuild on my Corvair that i did almost everything (except the heads) myself, and it ended up somewhere around I don't know 3-3500 dollars. New cam, lifters, pistons, rings, etc...
I'm pricing out this rebuild and so far have come up with the figure of 907.98
That's scary. That's reusing the pistons/rods/crank as is, and does NOT include honing, which I think I could probably handle myself.
The parts kits I'm looking at purchasing are from Flatlander Racing. They have some really good reviews and some not-so-great reviews...seems like a good balance, really. I've never known a vendor that didn't have a little of both types of reviews, ya know?
this is a re-ring and gasket kit, cam kit, edelbrock intake and carb. Not bad at all.

If the engine has the milage to need rings I will bet it needs a valve job and bearings. That is why the compression should be checked first. If the compression is not good enough that you want to do rings do the compression test again after squirting a tablespoon of oil in each cylinder to find out if the compression loss is due to rings or valves or both.
If you decide to do rings remember to do a ridge reaming or you will ruin your hone and probably brake the new rings.
