power steering gearbox issues
hows it going guys. i just managed to find an 89 w150 5.2L in decent shape. now the problem was that there was alot of play in the steering wheel of the truck. so as any person i researched a little and noticed that my steering box from my 85 d150 5.2L had the exact same steering box. and naturally i thaught it was an easy swap.(( just a note to anyone thinking of doing this. make sure u have a jaw puller handy otherwise the pitman arm will not come off.)) after hours of sweat blood tears and dirt. i managed to switch the pitman arms with the boxes and had the new box all wrestled into place. my problem now is that the pitman arm will not connect with the joint on the steering linkage(i cant find the diagram to see which exact part it is) it seems that it cant quiet turn enough to make it so that i can fit the linkage into the pitman arm. any suggestions because im stumped. thanks to anyone who can help cause i dont have a D.D. till its done :P
The pitman arm connects to the drag link which goes to the steering arm. Exactly what will not turn enough to connect up? The drag link should rotate enough to hook up to the pitman arm with no problem. If the drag link appears to be too short or too long just turn the steering wheel or turn the tires in order to position the ball joint where you need it to go into the pitman arm. When you connect the intermediate shaft of the steering column to the steering box input shaft the wheels need to be straight and the steering wheel needs to be centered. Since you did not remove the pitman arm centering the gear box should not be necessary.
