Diagnosis help - need quick
Hi everybody,
Last week my 84 d150 (with a 360) was upgraded to daily driver status due to my car's death... unfortunately, I was driving the truck today and the waterpump went out... and before I could get to the side of the interstate (atlanta five-oclock traffic doesn't like letting someone over) the motor lost all power and quit (the temp gauge was not pegged, but was a bit more than three quarters over... then it dropped to just under three quarters over when the engine lost power). There is oil all in the water and water all in the oil... the engine still turns over though.
I want to think that it is an intake gasket (plus the water pump) - but I'm worried it might be a headgasket.
This truck is my first dodge and has never given me any trouble at all before. I know that in chevrolets a blown headgasket won't dump oil in the water and water in the oil (when I say dump, I mean DUMP... it was pretty much instant and the oil looks like chocolate milk... not just the little water bubbles you normally get from a headgasket), it just blows water out the tailpipe... but I don't know if a dodge is different.
Are blown headgaskets common in a 360? Or is it more than likely just an intake gasket? I just don't want to do a head job if I don't have to, but at the same time I'd hate to waste a bunch of time doing the intake gasket and then finding out that it needed a headgasket. Also, by my reckoning an intake gasket would cause the power loss since it would disrupt the fuel flow, right?
Anyway... just wanting to make sure that I'm not wishful thinking...

in order to replace a head gasket you would have to replace the intake manifold gasket. you are probably better off replacing both gaskets at the same time. hopefully that would solve the problem. it does sound like you have a leaking gasket somewere in the top-end.
Hate to be a bearer of bad news but the symptoms you have described could also be a cracked cylinder block. You might want to do a compression test before any tear down. Low compression will isolate the problem away from intake gasket and help you to know what cylinder you need to pay attention to. The more you know before tear down the better your chance of a successful repair.
