What camshaft to use?
Hi all,
So I had to tear into my truck's 360 today... it had to have a water pump and intake gasket, so I figured that I might as well replace the timing chain and put in an aftermarket camshaft while I have the front and top of the motor apart.
But I have no clue what sort of cam to put in it. I'm pretty new to dodges - I bought this truck originally just to use to pull a trailer, but its lately been my daily driver. The previous owner put an edelbrock Performer intake on it (along with a carb that was waaaaay too big... it now has a 600cfm Holley on it), but the rest of it is bone stock as far as I can tell. This truck won't get out its own way currently - it barely makes it up hills when pulling a trailer... I constantly have to hold it in 2nd gear (3spd auto) whenever I hit a hill on the interstate while pulling the trailer.
Sooo... I like get-up-and-go, I love the sound of a rough and lopey idle, and I need the truck to get out of its own way when I use it to pull a trailer... what sort of cam duration / lift should I look for and what sort of lobe separation? (Also, what is it that makes that nice lopey idle sound?)
I do plan to add headers and dual exhaust in the future in case that matters.
Thanks,
Jacqualine

If it were me I would contact edelbrock and give them the same info you gave us and they will recommend the best cam to suit your stated needs. If the cam, carb, manifold and headers are not matched you will not get the gains you are seeking.
