Exclamation Power steering issues!

Hi all, I drive a 1987 Dodge 150 4X4 with a 360 auto. I have an issue with the power steering. When driving down the road, I can steer with just a finger but when I slow down to turn, I can hardly turn the wheel. The pump makes absolutely no noise at all, I have plenty of fluid, and the belt is good. Any ideas? Should I replace the pump? Is there anything else I can do before I spend the money on another pump? Thanks for the help!

did you make sure the belt is tight? if it's a bit loose you may have some slipage when stopped.

Is the fluid foamy looking or clear? When you are setting still, and it is hard to turn the wheel, if you rev the engine does it get easier to turn the wheel? If it does and the belt is tight and in good shape then your problem is most likely a worn pump or a stuck flow control valve inside the pump.

Or maybe your pump pully may be worn out also.

if the pully was worn out all it would do is act like the belt was loose and slip. i have never seen a worn out pully befor. i have seen bent and crushed one's but never worn out.

It would be the first thing I would check before the pump, it's a cheaper fix.
