axles and trans?
Will it move forward if the shifter is in 1st gear? Here is a very good article on our trannys.

Look on the flange just above the tranny pan on the drivers side. This has all the info to identify your tranny . You will find 3 sets of numbers. First is the part number, second is the build date, and third is the serial number.
The axle should have a tag on one of the cover bolts but this is not your problem.

thanks Seal for getting back with me. you were talking about the location of the trans tag and at the end of your sentence you said it probably was not my problem. what else do you think it may be if it is not a bad trans? thanks, and I forgot to say last time thank you for your service to our country, im ex Army 73-77 but dont hold that against me lol
The axle has the tag and that is what I was referring to as it not being your problem.
The numbers are stamped into the flange that you bolt the pan to. The tranny sounds like it is your problem and that is why I asked will it move forward if the shifter is in 1st gear. Reverse and 1st use the same bands. So if it slips or gives no drive in 1st I would think it was the bands. If it drives in 1st then I would think you have a low hydraulic pressure problem or a bad front clutch.
Thanks right back at ya for your service also. I did my 20 (70-90) mostly in various east coast teams. I would never hold that against you, because someone has to hold the line, but I preferred playing offense.( LMBO )
