Default FAST HELP on the removal of the Backing plate for drum brakes.

My plowing truck is out of commssion with one big storm passed and another on its way.The backing plate broke free on the passenger side of my truck and of course I lost brakes.I can get a new one from the dealer at $95 but I dont know if I even want to mess with it. How hard is it to remove the backing plate? Do you have to remove the axle? Or is it just the bolts?

Please respond ASAP thanks!!!

PS When I say backing plate I mean the part that all the spring attach to for the drum brakes. My just rusted and broke free so I have to buy a new one now.

You must pull the axle.

How hard is it to pull the axle and what parts am I going to need to replace if I do pull the axle? I assume that I will mess up the seals?

I don't know what rear you have so I can't give you the procedures for removing your axle. The backing plate is held on by a few bolts.

There is a hole in the axle flange on some rears that gives you access to the 4 bolts that hold the axle in and some rears you have to open the cover plate on the pumpkin to remove c-clips from the axle ends.

Cool, thanks. How can I tell what axle I have?
(I'm going to order the part now.)

If the pumpkin is bolted into the front of the differential you have a 8 3/4" rear and a retainer flange at the brake backing plate that holds the axles in place. If you have a rear cover on the differential you have C-clip axle retainers. Either way I would not suggest doing this without a manual handy.
