Installed choke thermostat..it runs rich and dies
Alrighty,so i got my truck a few months ago. And ive been running it without a choke therm. Well today i installed one and When i accelerate between 25-50 mph it surges, bogs and dies. and floods out. The carb has been fully rebuilt with a new choke pulloff. Once i unhooked it the truck drove fine again. What gives?
Here is some things i noticed.
The choke idle screw sits on the smallest notch on the plastic choke piece, even if i hit the gas,it still rides the smallest bump. if i back it off any more it wouldnt work correctly.
Also when fully warmed the butterfly is slanted by say 20% degree's.
oh yea..its a 1978 d150 with the 2bbl carter 318.

Well i feel stupid,(im still new at this carb stuff,i grew up in the fuel injection age) Evidently theirs suppose to be a hose that runs to the choke thermostat to heat the coil....I don't have that...IF you can get me a pic of it or where i can buy what i need i would greatly appreciate it. And where is it running too? the crossover? wheres the fitting etc that it runs to exactly
i'm not familiar with the dodge but on my old chevy a steel tube came off the intake manifold to the choke t-stat spring.
if you don't get it figured out, just install a manual cable to pull the choke on/off. its actually a hell of a lot easier to get to work. just understand how the choke linkage at the carb works. usually there's 2 motions going on - the butterfly flap, and the high idle steps. those motions might be tied together with a rod. and/or a vacuum pull off might be involved.
