Default Talked to a local at a car show

Talked to a guy the other day with a 90' dodge 150 with a 318 at the local car show. He said hes looking for a 318 and said hes got a 360 from a motorhome that he'd trade for. I asked but mines fuel injected. He said no problem. He said just remove the fuel pump and put a block plate on the block and mount a 7 lbs. inline fuel pump on the rail with a relay. He said then just take the intake manifold off my 318 put it on the 360 then everything goes back on and change out the brain box. He said that 360 works better with a 727 than 318. So im going to ask he will help me do all this. Is this guy right?

Ive seen posts on here about carb is better than tbi. But in my county they do test for smog. This is a 89 power ram but, its a farm truck only.

"He said that 360 works better with a 727 than 318." My 318 works just fine with my 727. Fact is the 727 can't tell what engine is driving it unless you over HP it.

Did he mention that the distributor would also have to be changed as it is computer controlled? How about the charging system as it is also computer controlled?

The 360 has more power than the 318 and a carburetor can be tuned where injection can't. None of this matters if you have to pass an honest smog test. If they see a carb in a 1989 you will flunk the visual before they ever hook the truck up to the machine. Not to mention that intentional altering of emissions systems is a federal offense.

tooltime; The TBI is considered to be a part of the emissions system.

The mention of the carb in your first post and the changing of the fuel pump made me think the carb was the direction you were headed. The fuel pump on the 360 would need to be blocked off like he said but you will need to keep your in tank fuel pump verses the new 7 lb fuel pump and relay he is talking about if you stay with the TBI.

It will run but I am not sure if the computer is the same in the 360 and the 318. Maybe someone on here can tell you for sure but I would think the injector pulse width (that is computer controlled) would be longer in the 360 verses the 318.

There are all sorts of ways to get around emissions. Guys around here used to take a diesel chassis (no emissions required) and swap their built up gas engines and it was completely legal. Pretty sure this has been outlawed now though.

I live in NC and they do not open the hood. AS long as it passes i would think that the motor would matter. I did inspections 1 time years ago and that was not mentioned in the class from what i can remember
