Default Dodge d150 Gas Tank question

Someone is offering to give me a non-running 1991 d150. It has not run in few years because of a bad fuel pump. My only reservation in taking the truck is because the shop that the previous owner took it to said that yes the pump was bad but there is some some type of coating in the fuel tank that destroys the fuel system and the truck was not worth fixing. This sounds to me like the shop didn't want the work at the time but i was wondering if any of the members out there had heard of anything like this in the past or if its a real problem.

I would say a free truck would be worth tinkering with. If nothing else it could be a parts truck.

It is a free truck.

I'd jump on it, if all else fails. Just swap out the engine. It would be a good summer project.

I would ask the owner what coating they put in the tank.
The entire fuel system can be replaced for a few hundred dollars if needed from a salvage yard. The engine itself should be OK. I would take the truck and if needed change out the tank, with pump and fuel level sender, supply line up to and including the filter and see how it runs. If need be you can continue up the fuel system to the regulator and injectors.

The coating on the tank is suppose to be a factory item according to the previous owner (a couple of Dodge house mechanics told him this). So I'm questioning if its true or not. I'm thinking along the same lines dealing with replacing the parts. Swapping out the tank, pump/sending unit is not beyond my abilities. I'm just going to test the ASD relay and pump. Depending on the results of that I'll drop the tank and see what kind of condition the inside of the tank is like i.e if there is a coating on the inside of the tank at all.

I think the key word here is "free".... Worst case scenario, you haul it to the recycler and get $100+ for it (perish the thought....)..... make sure you get the TITLE with the truck.....

Keep us posted....I'm sure together w/ the captain (aka SEAL) you'll have the truck running in no time!!!
