Default Timing chain

I am putting new timing chain and gears on my 93 d150 5.2.
My question is should i line up the timing marks before remov
al,been a while since i did this. My sevice manual says to line up the dots on the new one,then turn cam and crank to line up the ways is this right?? Any help greatly appreciated,thanks

The procedure in the manual assumes the valve train has not been installed yet.

Lining up the marks on the existing gears before removal makes it easier.

You can remove all the rocker arms and then screw around aligning the cam and ensuring the crank is at top dead center instead but I like to keep it simple.

One of these procedures must be done to prevent damage to the valves. Then simply line up the marks on the new gears with the chain on, and slide the assembly onto the shafts.
