Default carb spitting gas

Just got new timing gears and put everything else back on the truck. Went to start the engine and it will start for a few seconds then die out. The carb appeared to backing up with gas and spewing out the top. After some head scratching we thought that maybe the new fuel pump and filter we put on might be the problem, as it didn't do this with the old pump. With a pair of needle nose vise grips we pinched the fuel line at the filter and got it running much smoother. As soon as you would take the pliers off the carb would flood again. Didn't have time to put the old pump back on today but that is going to be the first thing we will try. Any other thoughts on what it could be?

Monday we are going to put the old pump back on and see what happens. If that doesn't fix it I'll start looking at the carb, starting with the float.

Wolfie, is it possible that the sudden jerk from when I was pulling out shrubs is making the float stick? Also I've heard that tapping the carb can free an unstuck carb. Any luck with this method and where is the best place to tap the carb to do this?

i've never had much luck tapping the front or side of the carb on my truck. i ended up taking the top half off the carb and checked the float and i found out that primer was disconnected. i think running the carb out of gas can cause the float to stick open.

It was the fuel pump. Put the old one back on and bam, runs like a champ. It feels like it runs smoother now as well, I'm guessing due to the new gears and timing chain having no slop in it now.
