Smile misfire at low speeds....

Hi,

Since my last thread I have changed the oil, replaiced coil, ht leads, plugs etc on my 1990 1500 Ram (318 with 225,000 kms) which I feel was necessary to do, but I still have a rough idle and it kind of dies off at low speed and then surges as the revs pick up. I managed to get the diagnostics to work and I have code 12 and 14. I guess that code 14 (not enough voltage to MAP) could be the problem? would this just need replaicing and if so where is the MAP located and is it easy to do?

I really appreciate the help that I am being given on this forum and I am really enjoying working on my new truck....

Eddie.

Hi Steady Eddie here again.

Well after changing the oil and filter (high milage oil and filter) Ht leads, distributor cap, coil and plugs (i think it needed it!) the engine is running smoother. But now I have codes 12, 33 and 55 (code 14 has now gone!). The idle is slightly erratic and at low revs it seems to missfire slightly and the revs are not smooth and it does not pull very well. But once the revs build up it pulls fine....So the problems are at idle and low revs when I am driving. The truck is driveable, but it would be great to sort the engine out so it is smooth through out the whole rev range (I hope you know what I mean).

Thanks Eddie.

Thanks Seal..........

I am okay at basic mechanics.......but do not have the know how re timing etc.....I have booked the truck into be safety checked (here in Canada if a veh is over 12 years old it has to have a safety check for insurance purposes!) and am going to get them to check the low speed misfire up. I am originally from the UK (now live in Canada) and on my honeymoon in the US in 1998 saw my first Dodge Ram.....I knew from that day that one day I would own one! I like the classic look of the 1st generation Rams.....

The distributer has a flange where it meets the engine. Put a scratch on both surfaces so you can always go back to the current position. Now you can manually adjust the timing until you get the best idle and power. You don't need a timing light just a little time and effort.
