why wont it spark???
Alright I'm swappin 318 engines in my 1992 dodge power ram 250. The new engine is from a 1995 ram van. I got it in and it will turn over bu no spark to the coil. Put in a new ckp sensor and still nothin. There are no relays or modules required on either engine. Could the ecu be causing this? Was thinkin maybe I will have to use an ecu from a 95 van? I'm at a lose as to what to do so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
I do not think the ecm is the issue, but do you have the vans ecm. I do not think they were VIN specific until 1996. Are you using the original coil? Did you swap coils? When was the last time the van engine ran before the swap?
The ecm is different in the 1995 van than my 1992 truck I've checked on that. I don't have the vans ecm to try it though. That's why I wanted to try everything else before I spent the money for a new ecm. Yes I've tried the coil from the van and from my truck and bought a new one. That's how I narrowed down that the problem is accuring before the coil. Not sure how long the van wasn't runnin before the swap but I would estimate less than 3 months.
I would think as long as the all of the connectors mated up from the 95 engine to the connectors on the 92 ecm then that is not the issue, unless the ecm on the 92 is bad. 95 and prior are OBD I and do not monitor very much. I am not to familiar with years any longer. I wish I could provide more advise, but I am at a loss.
I'm using the wiring harness from the 92 also because all the connections to the 95 engine were the same. I swapped them one at a time from the old harness because the 95 harness had been cut from the original 95 ecm and did not come with the engine. The 92 ecm was just bought a couple years ago (although it did get buried mudrunnin the last time it was drove)
When you say burried do you mean it got water in it? If so you might be able to pop it apart and clean it with som isopropyl alchohol and blow it dry. It may have dirt and or corrosion in it messing up the contacts/circuitry. Also I cant remember if one of the coil wires went to ground or not. Check all grounds.
