Why bother with cats?

The tranny is probably a 727 which is a solid tranny. Unless you have reason to believe the truck was abused or uncared for the tranny should be fine. I would suggest you adjust the bands while you are in there changing the tranny filter and fluid.

The truck was driven by an old man with a light foot.

Cats? What if I move later to a state the requires an inspection, like NJ? I guess I could always have them added. It would save me money for now to leave them off.

yeah I'd leave the cats off. Mine didn't even have them from the factory! (it's an 84)

Speaking of factory, is there a front pre-cat and then another one down the line?

Here is a link to a possible engine for it. The guy said it was never fired and just rebuilt. I need to double check the cam specs though.

Edit: I checked the cam specs, this motor needs springs, adjustable rockers, and the trans will require a 2200+ stall converter.
