Default Dodge 250 smokes a little

So I fell in love with a 85 truck that has a good price. Its basic and ugly.
Truck has under 90,000 miles and has a 360 with a 4 speed granny everything feels great, steering shifting doors etc. Everything works dosent make any strange drive line sounds or shake. it drives straight and great on high way. You can tell its under 90,000 becouse it is in such great shape. Doors shut great windows roll great etc
Has new waterpump on it and new tune up.

Make a long story short!
Owner said carb was rebuilt but they didnt fix the electric choke. Which was ok with me. But the idle is set really high and I didnt like that. Owner says that its tricky to reset the idle becouse it will affect a lot of other stuff (that was new to me)

So I went back the next day to possibly buy it but first I wanted to adjust the idle down. When we first started it black smoke came out for about 2-3 minutes (not a lot of black smoke) has a slight miss then it turned grey for about two more minutes and then it goes away and looks normal when the truck is good and warmed up the miss goes away too (the miss was only heard at the tail pipe cnat hear it in the engine bay.

He tried to adjust the idle but if he turns the screw (on right side of carb) it run for about 10 seconds at a good idle then die. It will run at a high idle and run smooth but will die at a low idle.

Any tips or suggestions? Should I pass on buying this truck?
I want to buy this truck so I can load it up and haul a load of personal belongings from CA back to Oklahoma. So im looking for a truck that will get me 1689 miles
Could it all be carb related or is their timing chain and valve guide issues?

Thanks a lot

PS this is my first post on here!
