Default Which automatic transmission do I have? 88 Dodge Ram D100

1988 Dodge Ram D100 - 3 speed automatic transmission, rear wheel drive, 318 engine. The Haynes manual includes specs for adjusting the "kickdown" and "low-reverse (rear)" bands in the tranny, and the specs reference the type of transmission - here is the quote directly from the book:

"All automatic transmissions are three and four speed units based on the basic Torqueflite design. The A-727 is the most common of the three speed types along with several variants; the A-904, A-998, A-999,32RH and 36RH. Four speed versions of this transmission include the A-500, A-518, 42RH and the 46RH models. The four speed transmissons are basically the three speed transmission with an overdrive unit."

Now, all that being said, how do I know PRECISELY which transmission is in my vehicle? Is there a tag on it or something?? According to the book, the adjustments for the low reverse band vary widely (according to transmission type), but the kickdown band adjustments are "2 turns backed off" for the 440 CID engine, and "2 1/2 turns backed off" for all other engines.

Thanks in advance!!! Mike

You can go to the dealer for a build sheet if it is stock. I would go to the dealer for that after I armed myself with the transmission ID numbers that are located on the drivers side of the transmission on the flange that the pan bolts to. You will find 3 sets of numbers there.
