I loosened the dist. and tried to time the engine. Adjusted it to 10* before TDC and tried to tighten the dist. only to have it nearly stall for a second as I tightened the bolt. Then it would level out and as I tightened it the timing mark would climb above TDC. I tried several times with the same result. I also noticed that the timing mark was walking all over the place as much as 5* without me touching anything. I wondered if the loosened dist. was causing a vacuum leak? Just to make sure, I don't need to pull any vacuum plugs or anything to time it. It does not have vacuum advance. When do you know it is time to replace a distributor?

I don't know if it would affect it but I removed the air pump and I have an exhaust leak with the cat converter where I cut the air tube. It is just folded over and pinched for now.
