If you have a Spicer 44 front axle it is engaged by vacuum that locks the front axles instead of using locking hubs. Look on top of the axle tube at the drivers feet. If there is a vacuum motor there instead of just a round axle tube you have a Spicer 44.

My truck is a work truck and has not led a pampered life and because of this I have worked on almost everything in the truck at one time or another. Our trucks share a lot of the same systems and that includes the Spicer 44 front axle.
