Default Gas / Deisel

Hey all, I currently have an '88 Ram 4x4 with a 318 TBI. I have been looking around for a new tranny with an OD to help me on fuel costs, and have had little luck. I thought I might look into the idea of switching to diesel. Is it doable to swap a diesel engine in place of the gas? I know I would still have to replace the tranny, especially since its just a 3 speed, but is there anything else that would need to change? I read that the tank and fuel sending unit will still be ok, but I dont know if thats correct. If its too much work to find all the parts for a swap, then I would be better off finding a complete truck to work with. Any suggestions? Thanks

I briefly thought about doing this myself. The prices I found for the big items stopped this thought in its tracks without my looking into it totally. A parts truck was the only way to begin to afford this and with the longevity of a diesel I would have been better off just switching trucks and fixing anything wrong with the new truck. It would have been cheaper and a lot less work. That being said it is possible if you want bragging rights but financially speaking it didn't make sense to me.
