'87 Ram 318 vs. Emission Controls
Ok, I've seen topics similar to this bounced around a bit, but I would like to hear from anyone and everyone regarding their experiences with removing emission control crap from their truck. Especially those of you who run 318's.
First, what components did you remove?
Did that affect:
Your mileage?
Performance?
And did removal of said items result in your truck running poorly which led you to chase down and make adjustments to other components?
I have '87 318 and I am looking for the cheapest, easiest ways to gain a little performance and mileage if possible. We don't have emissions testing where I live (for now, anyway), so that isn't much of a concern for me.
Thanks!!

Yep, I was thinking there was a fed law against defeating emission controls... but then I was thinking, "What they don't know won't hurt me."
I forgot to mention this thing is a 2bbl. It runs great, but we all know it's a slug that never met a gas station it didn't like!
I was just looking for some really detailed examples of what other people have done with their trucks. I'm not a tech wizard, but I can pull and replace parts here and there. I've never "built" an engine myself. A friend has an early '70's 340 that would be sweet, but I have a limited budget, too!

the 318 2 barrel engine that i put in my 91 looks like it never has never had emission equipment at all because there is a metal plate where the egr valve goes and it looks rusted to the intake manifold and it runs great.
In Va. the emissions laws sunset at 25 years of age for all vehicles. The one major problem you can have is ping. The removal of the EGR system can cause this vibration and when this occurs it can destroy the engine. Good luck.
