86 D150 has a short
I used to own a VW bug, and once I had the same issue: drained battery. Turned out to be the batt terminals that were dirty and didn't look like that, they were dirty between the batt post and the inside of the terminal.
The problem you're saying of no start may be due to the coil. Did you get a coil with a built-in resistor? You need to find out because an already-resisted coil was my headache for the last week, it turned out that I was sending a resisted positive signal to that coil causing a weak spark and a big trouble to make the truck run.
Also, these already-resisted coils need too much amperes to shoot a nice spark.

Ok, at first it started out, one day i went to town, drove all over tha place, parked at a gas station, went in, came back out, got in the truck, and it wouldnt start, not even turn over. Jumped it off, ran fine all the way back home (40+ miles). Replaced the battery, no change. It did that for about two weeks until i replaced the brushes in the alternator. Re-installed the alternator, ran fine for a week, then about an hour before it started raining one day it wouldnt crank, jumped it off, ran fine for about 11 miles then the battery died goin down the road, finally after about 45 minutes of off and on attempts tryin to jump it off (while trying to not burn my starter up), it finally starts up and runs fine. Bring it home, immediately after i killed it i tried to start it again-DEAD. Changed the voltage regulator because i noticed it had melted all the adhesive on the back of itself. Changed the plugs, cap, rotor, still wont start, it will crank but will not start.
You seem to be having two problems, a charging problem and a starting problem. These problems may or may not have the same solution. You are going to have to do some trouble shooting on the ideas you have already been given. The resistance on the resistor block needs to be checked, the resistance of the pick-up coil/s needs to be checked, you have been asked if you used a coil with internal resistance built into it. We can help you with knowledge and experience but you have to do the work and post the results.
i don't think the coils have a built in resister even if you have tbi. i installed the coil from my 91's 3.9 in my 81 and it seems to run fine like it should. also when i looked on rock auto the 81 and 91 had a lot of coils with the same part numbers.
