Default code 41 and intermittent charge

i have a 92 dodge w150. 318.
sometimes the truck will stop charging and throw code 41. which is alt charging problem. cant seem to find out what makes it hit and miss but if i hit the driver wheel well with a hammer it will sometimes fix it for a while or for just a few seconds. i understand that the voltage regulator is inside the computer but ive looked all over on the wheel well and cant find it mounted anywhere. any feedback?

It is in the fender behind the headlight. It has two electrical connectors and an air pipe that leads to the air cleaner.

ok so i took the computer out, opened the plastic case and looked around. when you tapped the board it would stop or start charging. so i went to the junk yard and the only one they had was in a 91 250 van. not sure on motor but was a v8. when i hooked up the new computer it wont charge at all. it runs but it seems that my rev limit is noticeably lower than before. now you hit it just tapping the gas a bit.

Each computer during these early years takes into account the original equipment on that particular vehicle and may or may not be interchangeable for that reason. These trucks are not good subjects for minor modifications from stock.
