Thumbs up Hello and 85 D350 questions

Hello

I was working on an 95 Dakota and needed help. I found this site and got some good info and got the truck running! It was a bad factory wire splice that went bad over time that killed the spark and injectors. That was a fix for a single jobless mom...

Now...on to my stuff...
I have an 85 D350 Sno-Commander with a 360 4sp trannie single wheel that’s my snow pusher and fire wood hauler. Truck is in fairly good shape considering it’s an 85 and being in MN the rust belt. I’ve had to replace both floor boards, clutch, timing chain, choke pull off,…..not too many other things….oh yeah…patch the oil pan, it had a hole half way up, and my oil consumption was reduced greatly!

I’ve been thinking about putting a locker/possie differential in the rear to help out while plowing. This is just thinking mind you, currently the $$ aren’t there….but I’m working on that.

Questions… What differential was put in this truck from the factory? (I probably should post the vin) What locker/possie should I be looking for that will fit this axel? I would even consider used as I would be inclined to rebuild a unit with new clutches.

Another question is the steering shaft….the flex link in between the steering box and steering shaft. Currently, there is a lot of play in the steering. Is there a good source on getting a replacement?

Thanks!

Dan

the easiest way to find out what type of differential is to jack up the rear axle and them spin the tire. if they both spin the same direction you could have a posi or locker. if they spin opposite directions you have a basic differential.

Crazzy....I know for a fact that it's the basic differential.... I'm looking for the locker/posi

your vin # will not tell you what type of rear differential you have unless you can get a build sheet for you truck from the dealer. installing a locker can get expensive. it is not something you can do in your driveway unless you have the special tools to do so.

A D350 should have a Spicer 60 or a Spicer 70 full floating axle in it originally. There should be a tag on one of the cover bolts for the ratio but if not I can explain how to figure it out if you need it.

Thanks SEAL!

I'll get the info off of the tag and report back!
