Failed "E" Test / 88 Dodge Ram D100
Failed E-test, no power on take off, sluggish, * hard on fuel!
I don't know the history on this truck (thinking of buing from friend)
Had it in to a Mechanic, he suspects a throttle body off a 5.9L (360)(?), also CTS may be out of range(?), map senser going or shot(?),
O2 senser(?)
I only had it in the garage for short period (time is money) he would have to remove throttle body to find numbers, to find what TB it is, etc. , etc.
-no vacume leaks found
-timing in spec.
-no mechanical problems found
What is CTS ?
*E test readings (E test are required in Southern Ontario)
ASM2525 TEST
HC ppm / limit 92 / reading 598 = FAIL
CO% / limit 0.52 / reading 10.71 = FAIL
everything else on E test was valid or pass
So what ideas do you have? Why is so much fuel being sent through throttle body? What numbers / markings do I look for on a throttle body that tells me it's for a 318 (and will fit a 1988) ? (I'm going to check auto weckers)
How is a throttle body changed? (I have not looked at it yet)
What else can you tell me? Thank-you

The air filer is clean and few months old, took the truck in hot and it went right in for E test appointment. I put in $30 of high test gas about 230 kms before E test. I did not pull the plugs yet but I remember helping changing plugs and wires last summer.
What about the posiblity that a 5.7l (360) throttle body was put on this 5.2L(318) motor? and sending too much fuel to the smaller motor.
How can I check to see if the correct Throttle body is there?

i doubt it has the throttle body off a 5.9. if it is it would be off a newer 5.9 because i think the 5.9's where still carbed in 88. if you have a manual and a multi meter you may want to test the sensor the mechanic suggested.
Ok, I'll get a hold of a manual, and check out the sensers. The manual will tell me how to check these sensers (CTS and map senser)
Is there an O2 senser on this truck?
I'll check and change plugs if needed.
* I have since found out that the truck was not running few months ago, and my friend got it to his "buddys" and this was when the throttle body was changed (with what?) and whatever else was done I do not know. Too many hands were playing with this motor *
Thanks for the guidence and advice.

i am pretty sure there should be an o2 sensor on it. a manual should give the acceptable voltage reading you should be receiving at the sensors. plugs are a good thing to check. they tell you whats going on in your engine. when you pull them you may also want to make sure they are gapped correctly. knowing what the throttle body is off of would be a good thing but i don't know if there would be too much of a difference between 5.2 and 5.9 throttle body.
