Did you ever try replacing the slip yoke after all?

hey sixgun,
yea i also changed out the slip yoke, somewhat has less play.
its to a point where its a little better, but not as good as it should be.
it seems to have a little side to side shake, its noticieable,i wish it was better,i'll figure it out eventually. taking a break now,to get some other things done on it. thank you

What is your rational for thinking the axle end play could cause this problem. Just curious as I do not believe this is possible.

seal, this will sound odd but it seems when its windy out, coming from the side of the truck my shake/vibration seems to be more evident or worse.
and since it seems to have a lot of axle end play, with the wind blowing against the sides of the truck in conjuntion with the excess end play which is side to side could make the truck shake. its just the last thing that has any play or slop in it. plus i also get a brake shudder when stepping on the brakes, seems to be in the rear. new drums, shoes, wheel cyls. in back. also all new rotors, pads, wheel bearings, calipers up front.
when step on brake at a high speed 50 up same shake that is there at 65 up on the high way, been threw everything a few times, cant find anything wrong anywhere, except that axle play. thank you

The 9 1/4 is a semi floating axle type. What can cause excessive end play in a semi floating rear? Worn or misadjusted inner axle bearings. I would think that you would be noticing a prominent growl coming from the rear and a clunk when you drop it in gear if this was the case. You would also notice quite a bit of play at the pinion with the wheels on the ground and the tranny in neutral.

Have you checked for axial play at the axles. ie; can you move the axles up and down out at the wheels.

seal, no axial play on the axles, just in and out end play. i even checked the axle runout with a dial indicator, and all is good. i have heard that there is shims that can be put behind the c-clips that hold the axle in to adjust the end play, just dont know what the end play should call for?? thank you

I had a very similar problem in my 1991 W150, pretty much went through all the steps you did, in the end i replaced front bearings and re-did the ball on the constant velocity joint on the front shaft. Fixed it right up. I think it was the bearings up front as the front shaft doesn't turn unless engaged in 4wd.

the battle goes on!! well i tore off the rear shocks{which were new gabriel vst} put on monroe sensa trac load levelers, it rides a lot better, but my shake is still there. it has to be in the suspension, but where?? this is getting frustrating. everything is new, except the rear spring, which i will get in october.
it has same shake/shimmy when getting up to speed just not as bad as when going 65 and up. it also does it when coasting off gas pedal, also does it in neutral. what can i check being that every thing is new??
two dealers and five regular shops cant find anything,or keep screwing me over saying its this that,no one seems to know what it is.
there is nothing else i know of,short of taking all the new stuff off and again buying all new parts and replace them one at a time until i find something wrong, and thats just dumb. stumped????? thank you

does anyone know if this problem could be a bad torque converter????
just been doing some research, seems it could be this. is there anyway to tell if it is the converter causing this shake/shimmy???
the trans shifts good the truck has unlimited power. any thoughts on this issue??? i really need to get this resolved soon, driving me nuts. thank you
