Angry 1974 dodge d100 lwb bounces like a roller coaster...help

Ok, so I trade one really crappy bronco2 for a kinda crappy d100, I'm gonna have issues. But I don't know too much, just what I've had to fix before. So I'm test driving for first time since I've got it, and once I hit around 10mph the truck starts bouncing majorly. So I slow down and it does is 'til I'm under 10ish again. Any ideas? I'm thinking the carrier bearing from the tranny to the driveshaft but it's a lot more bouncing than I'd expect from that. Somebody help me before I muder suicide this truck.

If you are saying vibration a carrier bearing is a possibility but not for a bounce. If it is actually a bounce I would look hard at the tires for out of round or bubbles. Does it do this on a smooth road or just on rough roads?

I worked for a street cleaning company a bit over the summer. The company they had service their trucks actually forgot to bolt the front shocks to the top mounts on one truck!

I have check the shocks and the tires, and now that I've looked I don't even have a carrier bearing just one masive driveshaft. I'm replacing the ujoints this weekend anyway since they're 37years old, ha. We'll see what that does. Maybe the rear end was rigged to work for one test drive. Haven't yet torn into that part... hope I don't need to. But if the u joints do nothing then I'm going to openit up and see if it's missing teeth or anything. If I didn't call it a bounce I'd call it a major hard wobble.

You just joined the forum so you missed this thread. You might want to read this recent thread for some ideas about what it could be.

Default Thanks SEAL

Thanks SEAL, that was long. But a lot of good info in there. Starting with the cheap stuff. Changing my ujoints Satuday and going to have my tires checked if that doesn't work. I'll let ya'll know what happens. God I hope it's not like his. Just got my truck. 37 years of owners probably messed up some stuff so I'm sure I'll be back for more after this issue is up.

Just happened to be looking in the drivetrain section of my newest Chilton's manual and saw a troubleshooting guide with what sounds like your problem. It lists the problem as, "Shudder as car accelerates from stop or low speed." The cause was listed as, "Loose U-joint" or "Defective center bearing." I couldn't find the "center bearing" listed anywhere in that section. Maybe someone else knows what that is exactly.

Okay, walked out to the garage this morning and looked in the factory manual. A center bearing is on vehicles with a 2-pc rear drive shaft. It is a rubber insulated center bearing that supports the area where the half-shafts are joined. It is mounted in a bracket and support that is connected to the frame cross member.

Is it possible you might have hit something and bent the driveshaft? You did say major bouncing.

The truck in question doesn't have a center/carrier bearing.
