MSD Coil installed
Just installed an MSD Blaster High Vibration Coil Model 8222. Wow - 45,000 volts. This model differs in that it has epoxy instead of oil in the coil. You can mount this one in any direction.

I had to ream out the + & - eyelets round since they are D shaped. I used the stock ignition wires. I had to take the little C-clip off of the coil wire connector that goes inside the coil. The factory puts a C-clip on the metal clip which snaps onto the screw head inside the coil's cone. The MSD coil comes with only the metal cup just like the coil wire attachment in the center of the distributor cap. With the C-clip removed both sides of the coil wire are interchangeable. I did a real quick check to see if it fires. It started and idled just fine.
My concern is that this coil produces 45,000 volts and I am only using the stock 7mm wires. MSD, naturally recommends their wires which are 8.5mm. Should there be any problems running the 7mm wires? They are fairly new and in good shape. I would hate to purchase some unneeded wires since 8mm ignition wires cost $50-$100. Anyone ever have a problem using the 7mm wires?

Good wires are expensive for two reasons. Better insulation and better conductors inside. Open the hood in a dark area and see if you have any arcing. There is no way for you to test if the conductivity is high enough to pass on all that extra voltage to the plugs but you might find specs for that for your wires.
Seal, I think your right. Why have all those volts if I'm not going to get it to the plugs. That's the purpose of the better wires. At least that's the way I took it. Kinda needed that nudge to do the right thing.
Keep the original coil. I just burnt out 2 of them this past winter in ND. The truck will back fire and not start below 30 degrees. That is what happened to me and when I went back to the factory coil I quit having the problem. I did run a MSD oil cooled coil and had no problems with it. The NON OIL COOLED COILS seem to burn out in these trucks in my experience.
