88 Ram w/ 318 - dip stick hitting crankshaft
Go figure. Now I know why this engine originally had an oil dip stick that was too short. Apparently the original dipstick often does not route properly, and actually makes contact w/ the crankshaft if it is inserted in some particular position - sounds like a clattering valve. Also, I have a feeling that I either have an incorrect dipstick tube (it does not have a bracket on it to bolt it to the engine) - it kind of just angles away from the engine - the only contact being where it enters same. My first thought was to replace the dipstick tube and see where that might get me....where might I go to find a dipstick tube for this truck??? Does anyone think that is the best initial approach?? thoughts??? this truck is drivin' me nuts....AGAIN!!

your dip stick should never be able to touch the crank. there is a passage in the oil pan that directs the dipstick into the deep section of the oil pan. there is pretty much nothing holding the dipstick tubes in on these engines other than a nice snug fit as far as i can see. i have not see any replacement dipstick for the truck but seen lots for cars.
