Question Coil Connection Question?

1989 D100 with 3.9l V6

A friend of mine brought this truck to me to change plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and coil because he was having a little trouble with it running smoothly. Well he had already pulled the plugs, plug wires, coil and cap, and handed me the old parts and the new parts to put in.

Plugs, plug wires and distrib cap, no problem. When it came time to put in the coil, I turned on the ignition switch and checked the coil leads to make sure I was connecting it correctly. With the switch on, the black wire shows 12V to ground and the gray wire show no voltage. So easy right...black goes to positive on the coil. But then I had a thought, (big mistake), I'll try to save my friend some money and use the old coil if it will work. When I went to hook up the old coil I found that the "D" cutouts on the lugs, and the flats on the terminals actually fit as though the black wire that had the 12V fit on the negative side of the coil.

I'm confused. I know it is something simple, but isn't something backwards here?

Oh and by the way he brought me a coil that says "to be used with external resistor", and he brought me the resistor, but I didn't find an old resistor anywhere. Is this the right coil?

Thanks
Dave
